Mother and Daughter Love

Vision

Our vision is to create a community where no mother with dependent children in the Sarasota area faces the emotional and logistical challenges of a cancer diagnosis alone. We aspire to be the go-to support network, offering not just connections to essential local resources but also emotional and mental well-being through specialized therapy. We envision a future where every mother battling cancer feels empowered, supported, and never isolated, enriching the lives of families in our community for generations to come.

My Cancer Story

My name is Dalanee, I am a mother of four ages 11, 13,15, and 17. I am a breast cancer survivor.

I was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma with Ductal Features, Stage IIA. Cancer does not run in my family. I do not have any ‘risk factors’ besides dense breast; I nursed all four of my kids. I eat clean and live a healthy lifestyle. Before diagnosis I was a regular at Orangetheory Fitness on University. I worked out 6 days a week.

Just a Cyst

January 2016, age 40, I noticed something different with my left breast when I put on my OTF heart rate monitor strap. It was not painful, it just felt different. I checked myself and it felt no different than before when I was told I have dense breasts. I had my last ultrasound/mammogram 6 months prior. I decided there was no harm in getting it checked out. My primary doctor ordered an ultrasound which led to a biopsy. The medical staff and doctor did not seem concerned. I was told by several during the biopsy process it does not look like breast cancer.

My Fight

February 3, 2016 11:30a.m. My life was forever changed. A doctor told me within a matter of 5 minutes that I have breast cancer and that he would need to remove both of my breasts. This appointment was followed by a gamut of tests to pinpoint how big, how far, and how invasive the cancer had grown. There was a sense of urgency in my case since the images were inconclusive to the extent it may have invaded my chest wall. I underwent a double mastectomy within two weeks of the diagnosis.

This was just the beginning of my battle.

I am now 7 years cancer free and as a couple who has navigated the challenges of cancer and family life, my husband and I founded Supporting Mothers With Cancer to ensure no mom has to go through this journey alone. We offer more than just connecting moms to support in the community; we provide a lifeline during one of life's toughest challenges. Our experience has taught us the importance of mental well-being, so we offer free therapy sessions to equip moms with emotional resilience.
